Implementing a modern, user-friendly website redesign to boost mobile engagement for the Lutz Children's Museum.

The Lutz Children’s Museum is a vibrant space dedicated to enriching the lives of children aged two to ten through ever-changing exhibits, daily programs, and interactive experiences. Founded in 1953, the museum honors the vision of founder Hazel Lutz, an art teacher and traveler, who aimed to create a space for children to explore culture, history, and science.

As a long-established institution, the museum had developed a loyal base of visitors, but their website had not kept pace with modern expectations. The site faced the primary challenges of an outdated visual design and a lack of mobile-friendliness. Over half of the museum’s website visitors were bouncing immediately, and the museum needed a fresh digital presence that aligned with its mission to make learning accessible and engaging for all.

Digital Strategy

We toured the Lutz Children’s Museum to gain a firsthand understanding of its vibrant atmosphere and interactive exhibits, giving us insights into how the digital experience could mirror the museum’s mission of engaging young minds.

Our first step was to create a restructured site map that would simplify navigation and make key content easily accessible to both parents and teachers. We developed wireframes to visualize the layout and flow of the new website, ensuring that the architecture prioritized usability. This initial phase set a strong foundation for an intuitive user experience, tailored to the needs of both mobile and desktop users.

Design

For the design, we focused on reflecting the museum’s lively and educational environment. The typography was chosen for its readability and kid-friendly feel, using fonts that were both playful and professional. We carefully selected a color palette inspired by the museum’s exhibits to appeal to young visitors while remaining visually accessible to adults.

Imagery was central to the design, highlighting the museum’s exhibits and the joy of learning. Photos of children engaging in play and attending programs brought the museum’s activities to life on the screen. The design created a welcoming atmosphere, aligning with the museum’s mission to make learning fun and accessible for all.

Web Development

With the design finalized, we moved into development, using the WordPress platform. Given the museum’s challenges with their previous site, we placed a strong emphasis on mobile-friendliness and performance. The new site was built to be fully responsive, providing a seamless experience across all devices, particularly mobile, where we anticipated a significant uptick in traffic.

We also focused heavily on performance optimization, ensuring fast load times through optimized images, refined code, and the use of caching techniques to enhance speed.

The Results

The Lutz Children’s Museum’s new website saw a substantial improvement in user engagement, particularly on mobile devices. With a responsive design and faster load times, bounce rates dropped significantly, and visitors were spending more time exploring the museum’s exhibits and programs online.

The museum staff also found the new platform easy to manage, allowing them to update content quickly and keep the community informed about upcoming events. Overall, the redesigned site helped the Lutz Children’s Museum expand its digital presence, driving more traffic and ultimately bringing more families through their doors.
